The Start-Up Guide to Hiring
Students
Student
interns offer start-ups fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and familiarity with modern
technology. Therefore they can play a vital role in your organization’s
success. However, it is important to keep in mind that students seek
internships that will provide them with not only hands-on experience, but also
with guidance as they maneuver the often-ambiguous world of entrepreneurship. Here are 5 simple tools to make an impact as an employer:
1. Determine the role your intern will
play in your organization early on and develop a clear job description-including duties,
responsibilities, compensation, and dates. You can do this by filling out the BSFS Start-Up Form, which will be
forwarded to BSFS’s network of students.
2. Start-Ups looking to hire interns should
have an employee(s) with experience in the students’ field of study or career goals. A student
who is hired to assist with social media will have a more valuable experience
if a Marketing or Social Media supervisor on the team can provide guidance.
3. Students may be apprehensive to approach
you with concerns, so it is best to designate a supervisor to hold regularly scheduled meetings to address key issues, milestones, and areas of improvement.
4. Orient the intern to the work
environment and company policies, such as attire, confidentiality, and performance
goals. This will leave little room for assumptions and disappointment.
5. Assign meaningful, but challenging
projects that relate to the student’s academic major and/or career goals.
